New building added to expansion

Structure will be used for agriculture and industrial arts

As construction forges ahead on the bulk of the Silverton High School expansion this summer, school officials are finalizing the specs for an agricultural sciences building.

Since it will be a free-standing structure and require a different kind of construction than the rest of the expansion, it’s the last piece of the project to be designed, said bond oversight committee member Kyle Palmer.

School officials are planning for the 30,000-square-foot building to will also house industrial arts, a wood-metal shop and auto repair classes.

“Some schools in the state are cutting these types of programs, but we’re spending a great deal of money and time to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Palmer said.

Fatal shooting must inspire change

Legislature should mandate disclosure of information

The recent shooting in Silverton reveals a flaw in state law: It lacks clarity about what information to disclose when police officers use deadly force.

The result is a conflict between ensuring a fair, thorough investigation and answering the public’s legitimate questions.

Rodeo in Sublimity will test the skills of young riders as they seek national fame

The sun has not yet set, but the young men and women gathered at Rusty Gorham’s Lebanon ranch on Wednesday, July 18, will grab all the daylight possible to secure that precious six to eight seconds.

Ten-year-olds in plaid shirts mingle with 18-year-olds in fringed red spurs. During breaks, young cowboys trade quips, stories and advice. In the chute, they take time to learn the emotions of the bull. Upbeat rock and techno pumps from a portable stereo. A small sign points the way to Wild Eye Ranch.
